GRAPHIC DESIGN SYLLABUS

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Students will use industry standard desktop publishing software such as Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign CS6 to design a variety of business and promotional publications such as: flyers, brochures, newsletters, menus, magazine covers, marker boards and calendars. This course will also include: desktop publishing terminology, digital images to create typefaces, layouts and graphics.  Internet use is an important part of this course.  Qualifies for articulated Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) credit at St. Charles Community College (not A.A. transfer credit).

COURSE RATIONALE:

This area of instruction provides content for employment in career areas which include graphic arts/desktop publishing skills. Demand in this area will continue to expand as businesses utilize advanced graphic arts skills to increase their production efficiency and improve the creativity and quality of business documents and publications.  

TECHNOLOGY

Canvas: This course is entirely online via Canvas. This tool is used as our online course throughout the year every day. You can find additional information & links along with the locations of where your assignments will be submitted for this course. Please be sure to know your username and password.

  • Turning in Canvas Work: Please be sure to make your Google Doc Assignment shareable to “Anyone at FHSD with the link can VIEW”. Write a Text Submission that includes the LINK to your completed assignment. DO NOT attach any documents unless instructed otherwise.

Google Drive/Docs/Sheets/Slides: We will be utilizing your Google Drive to save documents as a resource & collaborative tool. 

Photopea:

FHSD Gmail: You will be expected to communicate using FHSD’s gmail (@g.fhsdschools.org) so please know your username and password. To email teachers, do NOT use @g.fhsdschools.org; @fhsdschools.org is their main email service.

Web Browser: In order to successfully use Canvas, Chrome will be the preferred web browser.

TEACHER NOTES: I have high expectations for all students & myself to make this course a positive experience. I promise to be prepared & teach the curriculum so all students will succeed.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Students will understand that…  (Big Ideas)

  1. Desktop publishing design principles, such as page design and layout, typography, and image manipulation are important skills when creating published documents.
  2. There are multiple tools available to create desktop publishing documents.
  3. Correct spelling and grammar are important when creating a quality document.
  4. Photoshop/Photopea is a professional publishing tool used for formatting text and graphics, and has many applicable uses in the desktop publishing field.

EVALUATION: Grades will be based on the following:

  • Activities and Projects
  • Group Interaction
  • Tests (Production Based)
  • Final Exam

FHSD GRADING SCALE:   A= 90-100%     B= 80-89%     C= 70-79%     D= 60-69%     F= 0-59%

ATTENDANCE: It is VERY important to be in class every day! The course work will be much easier to learn if you are here! If you’re here & work diligently, that means NO HOMEWORK! If you find that you are having trouble getting caught up please ask me for help. If I see a problem with attendance or missing work I will address that issue with you first, if no improvement is made on your part I will contact home.

MAKE-UP/LATE WORK POLICY: Per school policy, students with excused absences have the opportunity to complete all make-up work. Although the general rule applied to excused absences is that students will have one day to make up work for each day absent, other factors may be taken into account as well, depending upon the circumstances involved. In any case, students need to check with their teachers for instructions regarding long-term assignments or scheduled tests (please make arrangements with Ms. Eaton before taking a missed test). Students pre-arranging absences & requesting homework are responsible for having their work completed upon their return to school. It is your responsibility to check for missing assignments on your student portal or your canvas course.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Plagiarism & cheating are serious offenses & may be punished by failure on exam, labs or projects. For this class, it is permissible to assist classmates in general discussions of computing techniques. General advice & interaction are encouraged. We will be pair-programming, however, each person must develop his or her own solutions to the assigned projects, assignments, tasks, & exams.
